Pro tip 1: Ask the lecturer what the exam will be based on so you know what to study. Most lecturers base their exams on their lecture notes and some on both the book and lecture notes (in this case for goodness sake ask which chapters). Don’t be afraid to ask, the lecturer will tell you, they want you to pass believe it or not!

Exam Study Tips:

  • Clean your study area: clean up your desk so that you have a clear work space that’s free of extra distractions
  • Organise your books: find all the lecture notes, tutorial notes, worksheets and books for each unit. Print off any missing lecture notes and put them all in order so you can find everything easily.
  • Minimise distractions: put away your phone, close facebook on your laptop – I know it’s almost physically impossible to detach ourselves from our technology these days, but trust me you will get a lot more done without it. Designate some time during the day to check your messages and update your status etc.
  • Listen to missed lectures: if you missed any recorded lectures listen to them and add notes first (I may or may not have had to do all of them in a few days pre-exam as I didn’t exactly attend them or if I did I didn’t pay attention – this one year I met the lecturer at the exam hahaha – still passed! P’s get degrees).
  • Create a study schedule: get organised! Work out a study timetable and plan our which topics and or lecture notes you will cover on each day. Make sure you schedule in time to eat and sleep too :)
  • Take breaks: you should study for no longer than 45 minutes at a time, so that your brain has time to rest, process and reboot. So make sure you step away from your desk every 45 minutes and take a mental break.
  • Study: find a system of learning that works for you. You could try taking notes, re-reading lecture notes, making mind maps or doing practice questions (old exams are often available for undergraduate units on the library website). There is no right or wrong way to study, simply find or develop a method that works best for you.

Pro tip 2: falling asleep on your book or notes and trying to absorb the information via osmosis DOES NOT work – trust me I know, I tried it … multiple times. Sigh*
